On offer here is the debut album from Swedish Power Metallers Zero Illusions. This album has been released by the band themselves with no record label involvement so you have to hand it to them for that.
There are definite elements of Prog included in the mix as there are some interesting rhythm changes, so don’t expect just a run of the mill Power Metal album. On the whole there isn’t too much ‘power’ and many of the tracks sound almost laid back when it comes to the tempo!
Some of the riffs are quite catchy and there are some very good instrumental sections. Bjorn Asking’s vocals sound a bit like Joacim Cans of HammerFall but higher pitched, verging more into Helloween territory at times. He does reach some pretty high notes, which at times are quite in contrast with what the rest of the band are doing when they play some heavier sections but this is probably something that just takes a bit of getting used to!
Overall, this album isn’t bad, the production is clear and crisp and when the guitars do the talking it is especially enjoyable. A decent debut which fans of progressive Power Metal should enjoy.
