If the comic book Misfits meets Pretty Boy Floyd image doesn't give the game away, the song titles surely will: Sex, Drugs and Heavy Metal; Young, Dumb and Full of Fun; Dead Girl Walking. This is not exactly high art!
Although Spit Like This do display a spark of individuality now and again, most of the time their influences are worn loud and proud.
This is shock rock'n'roll born from early 70s glam, late 70s punk and mid 80s metal, topped off with the merest hint of Batcave-era goth aesthetics.
The aforementioned Sex, Drugs and Heavy Metal is a bombastic opener and from then on the pace rarely lets up. From the Bowie meets Faster Pussycat swing of Heart Thief to the Hanoi Rocks on Sunset Strip bravado of Coming After You, via the mutant T-Rex riffs of Pussywhipped, you know exactly where you stand.
It's revealing that the album wraps with an entirely straight-faced and faithful rendition of Sweet Transvestite from the Rocky Horror Show. The choice of cover says a lot more about Spit Like This than a thousand reviews ever could.
The album probably isn’t as clever or as witty as the band would like you to believe, but if you can disengage your brain when you hit play, you might just enjoy the ride for ten minutes.
