Overall, this CD was a good little listen; upbeat, enthusiastic, and “mainstream likable”. Ginger describe themselves as “psychedelic blues rock” on their Myspace, but I didn’t quite hear those elements come into play until several songs through this sixteen song album. The first five tracks seemed to be straightforward, poppy, radio friendly alt-rock. Track number two, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, was particularly catchy, possessing a feel-good, summertime, “hauling balls out of the parking lot on the last day of school in your best friend’s convertible” feel about it, which admittedly, had this death metal head tapping her foot, and enjoying the ride, as summer comes to a close when I wish it wouldn’t. This little ditty was a much appreciated pick-me-up.

With track six, Black Widows, a crunchier sound begins to emerge, with some intricate tempo changes, and employment of some “Rush-esque” elements. This was a bit of a surprise after the distinct pop feel of the first five tracks - but a clear illustration of the band’s eclectic sound, and ability to capably carry varying creative elements successfully.

Church of the Broken Hearted is where the psychedelic edge presents itself, and this tune, as well as Jake and This Too Will Pass were slightly reminiscent of the Beatles, with a nostalgic, dreamy sound and tinnier vocals, more heavy on the reverb.

When She Comes, and Girls Are Better Than Boys, were particularly fun, light, and easy to listen to, and overall, the remainder of the songs possessed catchy grooves, buoyant rhythms, and an undeniably “easy on the ears” listening experience.

Ginger certainly appears to have a knack for combining an array of songwriting styles into one album while still sounding cohesive and congruent. Fans of alternative pop/rock with a fun, bluesy edge should thoroughly enjoy this record.
